Since swine flu, also known as H1N1 flu, hit headlines a few months back, facility occupants, owners, managers and cleaning professionals have been put on alert.
What should you know about H1N1?
According to cdc.gov:
Severe illnesses and death have occurred as a result of illness associated with this virus
Like most other flu viruses, the H1N1 virus is spread mainly from person to person through coughing or sneezing by people with influenza
Sometimes people may become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.
Your Strategy Should Target Touch Points
According to several studies, an influenza virus can survive on surfaces, and cause infection, for up to eight hours.
A common prevention strategy is effective hand-washing.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers recommendations on its website in regards to effective hand-washing.
CDC advises not only traditional soap-and-water techniques, but also the frequent use of alcohol-based hand cleaners to help fight the influenza virus.
Often the case in high-traffic facilities, enforcing effective hand-washing can be a challenge.
We offer some tips to help make proper hand-washing more appealing to occupants in this month''s Facility Focus, starting on page 40.
Help your facility''s occupants with their due diligence to keep your establishment out of the headlines.
