Pembroke Pines to drop job outsourcing plan

PEMBROKE PINES, FL — Three weeks after moving to outsource 300 city jobs in a closed-door meeting, Pembroke Pines officials on Wednesday made a point of voting — in public — to jettison the plan altogether, according to the Sun Sentinel.
Under a deal commissioners approved Wednesday, general employees will keep their jobs — at least until September 2011: In exchange, the employees accepted $7 million worth of labor concessions, including a 4 percent pay cut and an agreement to forgo longevity pay and city pension increases and contributions, the article stated.
The furor began May 26 when commissioners at a closed meeting selected Facility Contract Services to take over almost 200 full-time and 99 part-time jobs — more than 20 percent of the city''s workforce, the article noted.
According to the article, the city did not invite competitive bids and refused to disclose the contract terms.
"In this economy, at least employees won''t be outsourced," said Jim Silvernale, a spokesman for the Federation of Public Employees, which represents about 300 workers in the city.
"Our employees stepped up and accepted cuts," Silvernale added.
