SKOHEGAN, ME — Sappi Fine Paper has begun to use a material called "black liquor" as an alternative to about 100,000 barrels of fuel, reported the Environmental Leader.

Black liquor is a byproduct of the pulping process, and when fired into the recovery boiler, generates a sizable amount of steam, which provides the mill with enough energy to run operations, according to the article.

The company does not stop at recycling black liquor; they have struck a partnership with farmers to give them use of bottom ash and fly ash (also a byproduct of the pulping process) to enrich soil in which food for cows are grown, the article reported.

Over 80 percent of the energy used in the North American Mills is renewable resources, the article stated.
