MIAMI, FL — The city says it can save a substantial amount of money by outsourcing its five janitors, according to The Miami Herald.

The janitors, however, many of whom have worked for the city for more than 10 years, feel that they have been "stabbed in the back," the article stated.

According to the article, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) has filed a pair of grievances that challenge the city’s move to fire three janitors and lay off two others, while moving towards outsourcing their jobs to a private company.

The city is claiming the workers participated in "possible time clock fraud," but the accused, who didn''t speak English, said the incident that led to their firing was a miscommunication that was used as a means to an end to outsource their jobs, the article noted.

"They couldn''t say that we didn''t do our jobs, so they used a technicality that they could have given us a simple warning for," said Marcelina "Ada" Vierheilig, a janitor with the city for 14 years.
