The Betco Corp. of Toledo, OH, promoted Scott Brown to national sales manager.
Brown began his career at Betco in 1999 as a regional manager and was promoted to division manager in 2002.
Former Dow CEO passes away
Herbert D. “Ted” Doan, the last Dow family member to be chief executive officer of Dow Chemical Co., died May 16 at the age of 83.
Doan, a grandson of company founder Herbert F. Dow, was president and CEO of Midland-based Dow from 1962 to 1971 and was credited with growing the company’s businesses in the United States.
ServiceMaster CEO resigns
Jonathan P. Ward, chairman and chief executive officer of ServiceMaster Co. of Downers Grove, IL, resigned on May 16 due to “strategic differences” with the company’s board.
Board member J. Patrick Spainhour, former chairman and chief executive officer of Ann Taylor Stores Corp., and a director of Circuit City Stores Inc. and Tupperware Corp., is interim chairman and CEO while ServiceMaster conducts an internal and external search to find a permanent replacement.
D & A Building Service names Jacksonville manager
D & A Building Services of Altamonte Springs, FL, hired 14-year JanSan veteran Jerrol Cook as its Jacksonville branch manager.
Cook is responsible for overseeing D & A’s north Florida operations, which include contracts for more than 2.3 million square feet.
Enviro-Solutions hires regional sales manager
Enviro-Solutions of Peterborough, Ontario, has named John Hayes as the company’s regional sales manager for New England, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
Hayes has more than 35 years of experience in the JanSan industry, working for such chemical manufacturers as Spartan, Canberra, Airkem and Buckeye.
Chemtura names VPs
Chemtura Corp. of Middlebury, CT, has named Robert Wedinger vice president and general manager of process chemicals and polymers.
Wedinger, who has a Ph.D. in physical organic chemistry from Stony Brook University and holds 10 patents, comes to Chemtura from a similar vice president/general manager position at J.M. Huber Corp. in Maryland.
Chemtura also appointed Rick Beitel to the new position of vice president of sales excellence.
Beitel has 35 years of sales and sales management experience in the specialty chemicals industry.
Pro-Link hires two marketers
Pro-Link of Canton, MA, has hired Mike Nelson as vice president of marketing and Diane Mahana as marketing coordinator.
Nelson will be responsible for developing product and marketing programs, and building Pro-Link into a nationally recognized brand.
Mahana will help improve Pro-Link’s product and marketing programs through the development of literature, sales materials, and training programs.

JanSan distributor Interlink Supply of Salt Lake City has named Joe Versluis to the recently created position of national accounts manager.
Versluis, former sales manager of Hydro-Force Manufacturing, will handle franchise accounts that purchase for their associates nationwide.
NTP promotes Ogburn to associate publisher
Micah Ogburn was recently named associate publisher for the CM B2B Trade Group™ at NTP Media Inc., publisher of business-to-business print, electronic, and education and training products for the JanSan, carpet cleaning and disaster restoration industries.
Ogburn, who holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Siena College, will assume a supervisory role in addition to his current responsibilities.
Interline buys American Sanitary
Interline Brands Inc. of Jacksonville, FL, agreed to buy nearly all assets of American Sanitary Inc. (AmSan), a national janitorial and sanitary supplies distributor, for $127.5 million.
Interline, which distributes and direct markets products for building maintenance and repair, expected to close the purchase in July.
ISSA, OSHA team up on safety project
ISSA and the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration have set up an alliance to improve health and safety conditions for JanSan workers.
The program will involve hazard communication regarding slips, trips and falls, as well as blood-borne pathogens, personal protective equipment, and forklift safety.
ISSA members are encouraged to strengthen this alliance by contributing their safety success stories, safety and health fact sheets, safety training programs, etc., to the ISSA/OSHA alliance.
DuPont plans price increases
JanSan chemical manufacturer DuPont announced that it will raise prices by unspecified amounts on most of its products, noting that its total raw materials costs had risen 16 percent in the last 12 months and 85 percent since early 2002.
The price of finished industrial chemicals has risen by double digits in recent years: 11 percent in 2003, 15 percent in 2004, 14 percent in 2005, and another 10 percent already in 2006.
Dutch firm buys Coastwide Laboratories
Corporate Express, the American subsidiary of Dutch office goods supplier Buhrmann, agreed to buy Coastwide Laboratories Inc.
Coastwide Laboratories employs more than 150 people in 11 locations in the northwestern United States, and had sales of around $45 million in 2005.
Floor Safety Institute wins accreditation
The National Floor Safety Institute (NFSI) of Southlake, TX, was unanimously approved as an Accredited Standards Developer by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
NFSI also announced that it was establishing a slip-and-fall research and training center at Murray State University in Kentucky.
Berkeley study finds cleaners pose toxic risk indoors
A four-year study by the University of California at Berkeley and the Livermore Berkeley National Laboratory found that, under some indoor conditions, many common household cleaners emit toxic pollutants that can increase health risks.
The study, commissioned by the California Air Resources Board, looked especially at ethylene-based glycol ethers (which are classified as hazardous air pollutants by the federal Environmental Protection Agency) and terpenes (which can react with ozone to produce compounds like formaldehyde, a carcinogen).
While normal use in well-ventilated indoor spaces did not lead to risky exposures, some uses did; the study noted that multi-house cleaning by a professional cleaner would expose the cleaner to double the state’s guideline for formaldehyde.
Carpet makers require CRI-approved care
Beginning in 2007, carpet manufacturers Mohawk Industries and Beaulieu of America will require that professional floor care systems and chemicals used to clean their carpets have the Carpet and Rug Institute’s (CRI) Seal of Approval in order for customers to maintain full warranty protection.
Warranty claims for staining and soiling will not be considered if there is no record that the carpet has been cleaned and maintained using CRI-certified products.
