REDDING, CA — The maintenance supervisor for the Columbia School District was recognized earlier this week as the California school maintenance and operations Employee of the Year, according to the Record-Searchlight.
Jim Mays, who is well-known and liked by both students and staff, is one of six school employees statewide to receive the 2009 Classified School Employees of the Year award, the story stated.
"Mr. Jim," as students know him, works with the school''s counselor to find students he can mentor, the story noted.
According to the story, Mays, a 16-year veteran with the district, oversees a crew of six custodians and maintenance workers.
A jack-of-all-trades, Mays drives a bus route in the morning, works as the bus mechanic in the barn and directs the cleaning, maintenance and landscaping at Columbia Elementary School and Mountain View Middle School, the story added.
Mays said: "People say, ''you''re just a custodian.''" No, I''m an educator, but in a different way. I love it. I love the kids."
