CRAIG, CO — After losing his job in Wyoming’s oil fields, T.J. Montgomery decided to start a carpet cleaning company after rumors that startup costs are low and the industry is “recession-proof,” according to the Craig Daily Press.

To start Yampa Valley Steam Way, Montgomery cashed in his entire life savings to purchase equipment and supplies, the story stated.

Montgomery said: “Carpet cleaning, everybody needs it done. People are also turning to it more. I asked around before I bought the business, and carpet sales have been down lately about 40 percent. You know what that means? Cleaning is up.”

Montgomery, who had nearly two dozen jobs lined up before he even purchased a vacuum, has attended two Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) classes to gain essential industry knowledge, the story noted.

Montgomery says business has been good so far — some days busy, some a little slower, the story added.
