In a recent CM/Cleaning & Maintenance Management Online™ Bulletin Board post, one interested reader focused on the need for more industry resources that emphasize training, education and overall industry understanding.

There are some valid points regarding the state of our building service contractor and in-house cleaning organizations (in the recent Bulletin Board post).
However, I feel there are more than enough resources to utilize for consultation, training and certification.
A “certification” is only as good as its consistency towards meeting the standards and procedures it recommends.
Too many times, I’ve seen organizations tell us they’ve “gone green” with their program when all they’ve accomplished is to purchase a few Green Seal®-certified products and let them sit on a shelf, while they continue to use toxic, non-biodegradable cleaning, carpet care and floor care products, and to mist or aerosolize their spray and wipe products in the air, thus reducing the indoor air quality.
Here’s a thought and it may not be the entire piece of the puzzle you’re trying to solve: Try to reach out to organizations, such as the BSCAI (Building Service Contractors Association International) or the ISSA (International Sanitary Supply Association).
I feel the best source for customized training for specific tasks/cleaning procedures is your local sanitary supply distributor.
They have trained professionals who can provide hands-on training modules for carpet care, floor care, washroom care, Team Cleaning, zone cleaning, proper disinfecting, high dusting, window care and mold remediation.
They offer “train the trainer” workshops to empower your supervisors to have the ability to conduct on-site, reinforced training to hammer home the key steps towards success in this area.
BSCs and in-house facility managers who purchase their cleaning products, equipment and related tools at a big box store or a mail order firm are shutting themselves out of a very valuable service, which is mostly provided at no charge.
That is the partnered value-added services a JanSan distributor can provide to your employees.
If you partner, negotiate and work with your local distributor, they will extend professional services and free consultation in areas such as: Equipment evaluations and demonstrations; multi-lingual material to get through language barriers that sometimes exist; dilution control dispensing equipment to cut down on chemical waste and the potential for chemical exposure; and free or loaned washroom dispensers, such as tissue, towels and hand soap, which allows you to provide that value-added “washroom upgrade” to your clients.
Also provided are regulatory in-service workshops on blood-borne pathogens, chemical right-to-know and healthy high-performance cleaning procedural training, just to name a few.
So don’t be bashful, because we’re out there.
We’re energized and ready to roll up our sleeves to help your organization overcome those hurdles.
Remember that all employees begin their careers with a level of inexperience and some may lack motivation.
It’s your job to provide them the right tools and motivation to make their future a solid one with your company.
There will be pitfalls and shortcomings, it is and always will be the No. 1 challenge you face.
But, by tapping the support from the industry-wide resources I’ve mentioned in this letter, your future and ability to attract better-than-average employees will improve over time.
