SALEM, OR — Dozens of custodial jobs that would have been eliminated by the Governor''s budget have been reinstated, according to the Ventura County Star.

Under the proposed budget, 61 Department of Administrative Services jobs would have been replaced by contract workers, the article stated.

According to the article, the current workers argued that they would be more dedicated and flexible than the poorly paid contract workers.

"The custodians stuck up for themselves," said Rob Sisk, president of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) local 503 that represents the workers.

"Our members came forward and spoke up, and they were heard," Sisk added.

The jobs were salvaged by modifying other parts of the department''s budget, the article noted.
