DURAND, MI — After being laid off due to outsourcing, former Durand Area Middle School janitor Paul Mayers set to clean up the district in another way, according to the Flint Journal.
Mayers, who was elected to the Durand Board of Education six months ago, is now examining the salaries of the administrators responsible for his being laid off as a way to trim the district’s budget deficit, the story stated.
Mayers said: "The first battle was getting on the board. Now I have to gain their respect so I can get them to listen to what I have to say."
Mayers, who was hired by Durand Area Middle School in 1995, has been intrigued by district happenings for the past eight years, having attended nearly every board meeting, the story noted.
Two more positions will open up next fall, and Mayers hopes to fill the board with enough like-minded members to have a majority against further outsourcing of district jobs, the story added.
