CHICAGO — The National Safety Council has designated June as National Safety Month, and Tornado Industries Inc. is reminding all cleaning professionals to use this month to remember to clean safely, according to a press release.
"Janitors and building cleaners have one of the highest work-related injury rates. Workers may suffer cuts, bruises and burns from machines, tools and chemicals," according to a March 2012 update on the industry by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
In addition, musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), usually the result of ongoing lifting and carrying, awkward postures, repetitive motions and equipment that is not ergonomically designed, are common problems in the industry, the release stated.
"Over the past decade, manufacturers in the industry have taken steps to make equipment that is lighter, quieter, easier to use and safer. However, this is an ongoing process that we must continue," said Jolynn Kennedy, director of marketing for Tornado.
According to the release, the National Safety Council has designated each week in June to address a specific safety issue, with week one dealing with employee wellness, week two with ergonomics, week three with slips, trips and falls and week four covering driving safety.
