JOPLIN, MO — There are still a number of unlivable homes in the tornado zone, but extra care must be taken prior to their demolition due to the presence of hazardous materials, according to KODE-TV.

More than 200 homes in the tornado damaged area have been declared dangerous by the Building Board of Appeals and the next step in the process of rebuilding is demolishing dangerous homes with asbestos, the article stated.

"At one time it was the norm was to build it with asbestos siding or have asbestos insulation in it because it''s a great insulating material," said Jack Schaller, P.E., assistant director of public works.

According to the article, the city is now accepting bids from asbestos removal certified contractors to make sure the asbestos does not become a health hazard.
