WINNIPEG — Infection control experts from across the country will meet in Saskatoon from June 16-21, 2012, at TCU Place for an educational workshop and conference, according to a press release.

The Community and Hospital Infection Control Association (CHICA-Canada) brings together infection prevention and control professionals (ICPs), medical microbiologists, epidemiologists and infectious disease specialists from all provinces and territories of Canada, as well as international guests involved in the prevention of healthcare-acquired infections (HAIs), the release stated.

According to the release, it is estimated that over 200,000 patients a year develop infections as a result of their treatment and, of those, over 12,000 will die.

Healthcare-acquired infections cost the Canadian healthcare system over $1 billion annually, the release noted.
