VANCOUVER, BC — The Vancouver Island Health Authority declared the latest outbreak of Clostridium difficile (C. diff) at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital over after nearly five months, according to the Nanaimo Daily News.
The deadly disease infected 49 patients and was directly attributed to two patient deaths, the article noted.
Overcrowding at the hospital continued to hamper housekeeping efforts to keep up with cleaning and it has put an additional strain on nursing staff who have to follow meticulous protocol when visiting patients, the article stated.
According to the article, increased hand hygiene practices and additional housekeeping staff will continue even now that the outbreak is over.
