Hospital janitor charged with identity theft

NEW ORLEANS — Federal prosecutors have charged a former hospital janitor and his girlfriend with stealing the identities of hospital patients to finance high-end purchases, according to The Times-Picayune.

Clyde Washington, 50, was charged with the theft of patient documents from a New Orleans hospital between November 2008 and June 2009, the article stated.

According to the article, the documents, which were supposed to be shredded, contained confidential information such as patients'' names, social security numbers, home addresses, and dates of birth.

Investigators said that Washington and his girlfriend, Sherrie Blair, used the documents to open online accounts to order fraudulent purchases, the article noted.
