How did you get your start in the cleaning industry?
I started working at our local hospital when I was 16 years old in the dietary department.
Then, a new hospital was built, and I transferred to the housekeeping department.
I took on most of the responsibilities there, and I started taking management classes so I could move up in the department.
I then became a supervisor and, later, co-manager of the department. I left the hospital after 20 years and worked at a clinic.
I am presently the Executive Housekeeper at Pine Crest Nursing Home in Merrill, Wis. I also started my own cleaning business.
Tell us a bit about your business.
We are a 180-bed nursing home owned by Lincoln County.
I have 10 of the most dedicated team members working for me that help keep the place looking great.
Most of our rooms are VTC with two beds in them.
We also have three theme lounges for the residents to enjoy with one being a formal dining room, one a north woods room, and one a music room.
In my side business, I do general cleaning, along with some hard floor and carpet cleaning.
What responsibilities are the most challenging?
There are several responsibilities I find challenging. One is keeping the floor looking good in the winter. Another is getting others to see that we need their help in keeping the home looking great.
The last one is the hardest: Making sure that the residents stay within the guidelines of what they can and can’t bring with them into the facility.
What is your favorite part of your job, and your least favorite?
My favorite part of my day-to-day job is interacting with all of the residents.
In addition, I enjoy hearing from visitors and staff on how clean this home is.
My least favorite part of the job is when I can’t give some of my staff vacation when they want.
I also don’t like explaining to the residents that they can’t have something because regulations say they can’t.
