CHARLESTON, SC — Charleston County school officials will pay former custodians extra money after a poorly worded letter confused many, according to The Post and Courier.

Many custodians, who were laid off due to outsourcing, received a poorly written letter, leaving many confused about how much money the district owed them, the article stated.

According to the article, the district has decided to pay the custodians an extra sum, ranging from $840 to $1,500, depending on how long the individual worked for the district.

"The district sent its custodians a letter at the end of July in an attempt to describe the final paychecks they would receive," said Mike Bobby, the district''s chief financial and operations officer.

"Many employees interpreted the letter to mean they would receive more money than they actually did from the district," Bobby added.

The school board unanimously approved the payout, citing the lack of clarity in the district''s communications, the article noted.
