LONGMONT, CO — A rough year for Andy Barela and his family just got a little easier, according to the Longmont Times-Call.

On Friday, the faculty and students of Niwot High School sang Christmas carols at Barela''s home and gave the family a check for $6,000, the article stated.

According to the article, Barela, a custodian at Niwot High School for four years, was diagnosed in March with stage-three colon and rectal cancer.

Barela was laid off in March after having used up all of his sick time, the article noted.

The St. Vrain Valley School District offered to give Barela back his job once he is well, but unemployment also meant no heath insurance, the article added.

After Thanksgiving, a Niwot senior began collecting money to help aid Barela and his family, the article concluded.
