ATLANTA — An explosion at Mercer University led to the evacuation of the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and sent two students to the hospital, according to WSB News.
The explosion set off the building''s sprinkler system, causing extensive water damage to the two-story complex, the story stated.
DeKalb County Fire Captain Eric Jackson said: "It appears there was some cleaning that was going on utilizing some hydrochloric acid and somewhere in the midst of that there was a reaction that resulted in a small explosion with no fire."
A restoration crew arrived on campus Tuesday night to begin the task of cleaning up; it remains unclear how much the restoration will cost or when the college will be safe for occupation again, the story noted.
Neither of the two students sustained life-threatening injuries, but both underwent chemical decontamination at the scene, the story added.
