According to the release, the EcoLogo certification will help away-from-home markets identify which products are the most environmentally- and health-friendly.
Scot Case, vice president of TerraChoice, managing company of the EcoLogo program, said: "Hand Sanitizers is a new product category for EcoLogo, and this new standard will allow purchasers to select hand sanitizing products with reduced environmental and health impacts."
To qualify for the certification, hand sanitizer products must comply with the minimum bio-based content standards established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture''s (USDA) BioPreferred program, the release stated.
Kate Lewis, BioPreferred''s deputy program manager, said: "Adding bio-based content as an aspect — a requirement — to EcoLogo''s multi-attribute product standard validates bio-based product developments and sets the stage for more rigorous formulation of both bio-based and conventional hand sanitizers in the years to come."
EcoLogo is a third-party eco-labeling program approved by the Global Ecolabeing Network, the release added.
