Diversey Announces Sustainability Achievements During Annual Release of Green Building Research
Company to Install a UTC Power 400-Kilowatt Fuel Cell at its Global Headquarters, U.S. Distribution Center First Commercial Facility in the World to Earn Triple LEED Gold Certification
STURTEVANT, Wis. – Diversey, Inc. today outlined the results of its long-term commitment to improve the sustainability profile of its global headquarters campus under LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards and announced that it will install a UTC Power 400-kilowatt fuel cell at its main headquarters building in Sturtevant, Wis. Diversey is the first company in Wisconsin and the first company in the Upper Midwest to generate its own power onsite with a fuel cell.
Diversey made the announcement during a Web-based program titled “Building A Green Future: Emerging Trends in the Construction and Maintenance of Green Facilities,” hosted by, a Web site of Greener World Media. Featured in the presentation were results of the third annual Green Building Market Impact Report, an annual global survey of green building market trends and the impacts of LEED on land use, water, energy and raw materials.
In addition, the company announced the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has awarded Diversey’s Mount Pleasant distribution center its third LEED certification at the Gold level, making it the first commercial building in the world to hold three LEED Gold certifications. The facility earned LEED Gold for Commercial Interiors (CI), following its Existing Buildings (EB) certification (earned June 2010) and New Construction (NC) certification (earned October 2007).
“Our experience with LEED is further demonstration of how sustainability can drive business results,” said Diversey President and CEO Ed Lonergan. “Using very clean, low-pollution energy sources and reducing our waste is right for the environment and generates substantial cost savings for our operations.”
Cumulative Savings at Diversey’s Headquarters Campus Since Diversey’s main headquarters building was certified as LEED-EB Gold in 2004, the facility has achieved substantial energy, water and carbon emission savings through various operational and environmental initiatives. These initiatives have helped the company reduce water consumption across its global campus by 15.6 million gallons since 2004. Additionally, since 2006, Diversey’s headquarters campus uses:
• 28 percent less natural gas;
• 15 percent less electricity; and
• 16 percent less carbon emissions, the equivalent of taking more than 500 cars off of the road.
A series of creative efforts to reduce paper waste has resulted in substantial savings. Since these initiatives began in 2008, Diversey has saved:
• 5,824 reams of paper, the equivalent of 350 trees, and
• 186,000 paper cups, the equivalent of 1.2 tons of waste or four large Dumpsters filled with cups.

Clean Energy Fuel Cell to go Online by Early 2011 Diversey is installing a 400-kilowatt fuel cell from UTC Power, a United Technologies Corp. company (NYSE: UTX) at its main global headquarters building. It is estimated the fuel cell will generate more than 40 percent of the building’s electricity and 75 percent of its heat, further reducing the company’s carbon emissions by 3,365 metric tons per year, which is equivalent to taking 685 cars off the road. The fuel cell is expected to be operational by the first quarter of 2011.
Fuel cells are one of the cleanest energy-generation sources available in the world and meet the strictest U.S. emission standards. Highly energy efficient and virtually pollution-free, fuel cells produce electricity, heat and water through an electrochemical process. The PureCell® Model 400 System from UTC Power that will be installed at Diversey’s global headquarters has multiple benefits, including:
• A 20-year product life with a 10-year stack life;
• Overall system efficiency of up to 90 percent; and
• Water-balance design – no consumption or discharge of water in normal operations – saving millions of gallons of water when compared to central generation and other fuel cell technologies.

Diversey’s Triple-LEED Gold Distribution Center In October 2007, just three months after opening its doors, Diversey’s Mount Pleasant 550,000-square-foot distribution center earned LEED-NC at the Gold level, making the facility the largest LEED-certified distribution center in the United States. LEED-NC defines the design parameters and construction and commissioning processes to build a green building. It is a one-time certification that confirms a building has been built with environmental improvements and will perform well. Simultaneous to earning LEED-NC, Diversey’s distribution facility was registered in the LEED-EB program.
Diversey closely tracked the facility’s environmental progress, enabling the company to identify incremental energy savings that are necessary for the LEED-EB Gold rating. As a result of initiatives to improve the facility’s Energy Star score and overall energy efficiencies, the facility achieved a 10 percent electrical use reduction and a 50 percent gas use reduction since it opened. LEED-EB certification is based on measured performance of buildings in operation, and is the proof of a sustainable building. By incorporating the principle of continuous improvement, LEED-EB has become the framework for the operation of all Diversey facilities. LEED-EB is the only LEED rating that requires periodic recertification.
In June 2010, the company announced the certification of its entire global headquarters campus under the USGBC’s LEED program. Diversey also installed wind turbines at its headquarters earlier this year.
