SCARBOROUGH, ME — The Scarborough School Department is looking to offset a tough budget year by considering outsourcing custodial services at its six buildings, according to Keep Me Current.

In March, the department issued a request for proposal from cleaning companies capable of taking care of more than 600,000 square feet of space that is currently maintained by a staff of 30, the article stated.

According to the article, the move to privatize comes as the janitors'' union is at the end of a three-year contract and beginning negotiations with the school district.

None of the current custodial staff had an idea their jobs were on the chopping block — not until some saw the request notice in the newspaper, the article noted.

"It was kind of out of the blue, wondering what was going on, and why we didn''t know anything about it," said high school custodian Josh Collins.
