With this year''s Memorial Day in the books, we can say hello to the unofficial start to summer. This year, in many places, spring was only seen for a short amount of time and summer has already come on in full force.

This can lead to unique obstacles for many facilities who are not yet equipped for this warm weather, or who are now facing the prospect of higher energy bills this summer, as running air conditioning is helpful to building occupants, but can hurt many bottom lines.

How does your facility balance the comfort of occupants and the rising cost of energy in the summer months? Do you utilize a set, timed thermostat? Does opening windows help in the slightest or simply add most dust and pollen to the indoor environment? How do you field complaints?

One thing I have noticed is that, with today's push for environmental efficiency, many windows in newer buildings do not open. In such a case, there is little alternative to cranking up with air conditioning on warm days. Another question I'd like to pose is, "Do you clean your air ducts periodically to maximize airflow and HVAC efficiency?" Especially for those who do like to open windows, regardless if air conditioning is being used in conjunction with the natural airflow, the added dust and pollen can become trapped within the duct work.
