MEDFORD, NJ — In the midst of Tropical Storm Irene three school district custodians acted on another plan, according to the Journal Registry.
Budd Markelwith, Janice Hogan and Deb Clarke of Chairville Elementary School were on hand to assist the American Red Cross and the Medford Office of Emergency Management with a makeshift shelter, the article stated.
According to the article, starting Saturday, August 27 at noon through the afternoon on Monday, August 29, each of the custodians took shifts.
Markelwith retrieved hourly faxes from the township fire department about the status of the storm and communicated that information to those at the shelter, set up cots and helped out as needed while the storm evolved, the article noted.
As families began to return home, each person was asked, "''Are you sure you''re OK to leave?'' We made sure everyone could get home safely and felt OK about going."
