MONTVILLE, NJ — After listening to dozens of comments, all opposed to outsourcing custodial services, the Montville Board of Education voted unanimously to eliminate 37 jobs and hire Cleveland-based GCA Services Group, according to The Record.
Parents were passionate in their opposition to the outsourcing balancing with concerns about safety with the highest of praise for the current staff of custodians, the article stated.
Jason Jones, who has children attending Woodmont, said that a 10-minute Google search revealed that GCA employees had been identified as felons.
"It''s unfathomable that this was one of the top two companies," Jones said.
"Don''t be penny wise and pound foolish. You don''t hire Michael Vick to walk your dog or Lindsay Lohan to babysit your kids and you shouldn''t hire GCA to take care of the buildings our kids are in," Jones added.
Every Board member voted to outsource the custodians and as individuals, many of them lamented the decision they felt they had to make, the article noted.
"I''d like to be able to vote with my heart," said Jackie Ritschel, "but the current financial situation won''t allow it."
