EAST GRAND RAPIDS, MI — After reaching an agreement with the Board of Education, East Grand Rapids Public Schools custodians will keep their jobs while making $350,000 in concessions, according to the Grand Rapids Press.
Under the new agreement, the custodians are taking a 15 percent salary decrease, accepting a mandatory three-week summer furlough and paying higher premiums for health coverage, the story stated.
East Grand Rapids Public Schools sought bids from contract cleaners last winter and found that $500,000 a year could be saved by outsourcing the custodial department, a move that was ultimately voted against, the story noted.
Lenore Davis, a custodian at Wealthy Elementary School, said: "It was hard to take, but it''s a good thing. We were gung-ho and remained hopeful from the first day privatization was on the table."
The new agreement will keep the custodial services of East Grand Rapids Public Schools in-house for at least two more years, the story added.
