MERCED, CA — After a chemical spill at UC Merced, four custodians were taken to Mercy Medical Center for observation, according to the Merced Sun-Star.

The spill occurred in the penthouse of the science and engineering building, which is right above the third floor and houses machinery that helps operate the building, the article noted.

According to Kevin Creed, director of environmental health and safety, the accident involved 10 to 15 gallons of water treatment chemicals, which are used to prevent mineral build-up in pipes.

Two custodians discovered the spill, reported it and were decontaminated and taken to the local hospital; two other custodians that were found to be in the vicinity of the spill also were decontaminated, the article stated.
