WATERLOO, IA — Custodians from the Waterloo Community Schools were honored last Thursday for their green approach to cleaning, according to the WCF Courier.

The custodial staff was presented with a certificate of recognition for good environmental stewardship by the Cedar Valley Shaklee Association, the article stated.

According to the article, the district''s program for green cleaning was started seven years ago.

"It started with our fluorescent light tubes — switching to low-mercury lamps," said Mike Loftus, the district''s custodial manager.

"We recycle all fluorescent lamps, high-intensity discharge lamps and ballasts in the district," Loftus added.

Other improvements include installing GOJO green-certified hand cleaner and dispensers district wide; Ecologo-certified paper towels and toilet paper; and using Green Seal-certified cleaning products, the article noted.
