NEW HAVEN, CT — For the fourth year in a row, New Haven Public Schools (NHPS) custodians have pooled their money to give a gift to students, according to the New Haven Independent.
Members of American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Local 287 presented their gifts — 32 $25 debit cards — to 16 randomly chosen schools, the article stated.
According to the article, the debit cards are good wherever debit cards are taken.
Principals from the chosen schools are tasked with deciding which students receive a gift card, the article noted.
"We work for the schools and the students," said local Vice-President Mark Bohannon, High School in the Community''s head custodian.
"This is a way for us to give back to the community that employs us. We hope the gifts will bring some smiles to the kids'' faces," Bohannon added.
