CRANSTON, RI — The head custodian at Western Hills Middle School
was suspended without pay following the discovery of a videotape showing the custodian tampering with the employee time clock, according to the Providence Journal
According to the story, Neal Emmett will be on suspension until the School Committee can hold a termination hearing, if he does not choose to quit first.
School officials started investigating last week after WPRI-TV
called and said it had received a videotape in the mail from an anonymous sender showing Emmett uncovering a time clock in the janitorial office, changing the time and punching out five time cards before replacing the cover, the story stated.
Superintendant Peter Nero said: "I’m going to assume it was not a one-time occurrence. I’m not naïve. I don’t think there’ll be a custodian in the district for the next year who comes in a minute late or leaves a minute early."
It may be impossible to determine who the time cards belonged to because the videotape was made several months ago and the custodial staff at Western Hills Middle School has changed since then, the story noted.
School officials are concerned that someone installed a video camera, which is in violation of school policy, rather than approaching a superior and reporting that someone was tampering with a time clock, the story added.
