VISALIA, CA — Despite a leaner budget, facilities director for the Exeter Union School District, Gabe Espinola, maintains its business as usual, according to the Visalia Times-Delta.

With fewer budget dollars set aside for things like construction and upgrades, Espinola has learned to do more with less, and without the help of contractors, the article stated.

According to the article, Espinola believes he has saved the district nearly $300,000 by doing much of the construction and maintenance work on the district''s four buildings himself.

"We do so much of the work in-house that I don''t notice the budget as badly," said Espinola.

"I''ll buy the materials and build everything so there''s no cost. A lot of places, they''ll have to contract out," Espinola added.

Espinola uses electrical work as an example of the savings he can offer the district; as skilled electrician and carpenter, Espinola can do the electric work at no extra charge, compared to the $45 an hour a contractor would be paid, the article noted.

Jacks of all trades are a dying breed. Kudos to those custodial and maintenance professionals who go above and beyond written expectations. Do any of you in-house folks perform similar tasks as Gabe Espinola to save your district or facility money? Have any of you contractors lost business because in-house workers are performing tasks themselves?
