HOUSTON, TX — Last November, Camarena Cruz just knew something was out of the ordinary when two men approached her to wanting to take a piece of floor equipment out of her school for repair, according to The Examiner.
The men wore khaki uniforms, while the uniforms for Spring Branch ISD maintenance workers are blue, and neither could produce identification, the article stated.
According to the article, Cruz also knew, as an employee of the district for more than 10 years, that Spring Beach ISD doesn''t contract with an outside company for equipment repair and that there was absolutely nothing wrong with the machine in question.
"She knew what was up. She followed them outside and got a good description to give to us," said Chief Chuck Brawner of the Spring Branch ISD Police Department.
For her actions, Cruz was named the district''s February employee of the month, nominated by Brawner, who said "Mrs. Cruz followed all the procedures the police department has set out as guidelines to keep our schools safe from intruders. She is a fine example of how each of us can deter crime on our campuses by being alert and following safety rules," the article noted.
The icing on the cake, though, was that one of the men apprehended was Alberto Limon, 45, a member of the Mexican Mafia, the article added.
