KERRVILLE, TX — The discovery Friday of a local campus custodian''s criminal record has school district officials here planning to re-examine their handling of background checks for staff, according to the San Antonio Express-News.
Christina Anzualda was fired from the B.T. Wilson Sixth Grade School for failing to disclose two convictions since she was hired in 1998, the article noted.
"We weren''t aware of any of the charges even though our employee code of conduct requires any employee to let us know if they are arrested or convicted," said Kerrville Independent School District spokeswoman Lisa Winters.
Besides a 2009 felony driving while intoxicated (DWI) conviction and a 2003 misdemeanor pot conviction, Anzualda''s rap sheet includes convictions for six more driving offenses before she joined the district, including three DWIs, the article stated.
According to the article, her hiring predated adoption of the current district policy on hiring/retaining workers with criminal records, which requires background checks for all new workers and fingerprint scans for teachers.
