PURCHASE, NY — Jaime E. Jaramillo, an Ecuadorian immigrant and custodian at Purchase College, is hopeful he will become a naturalized citizen of the country he has lived in for two decades, according to ABC News.
Jaramillo is a retired sergeant from the Ecuadorean army who came to the United States in 1988 in search of a job, the story stated.
Jaramillo said: "It was easy to get a visa. It''s hard for other people to get one, yes, but the consulate knows that a veteran won''t stay abroad for too long."
After finding a custodial position at Purchase, Jaramillo quickly found comradery. Luis Cossio, an immigrant from Peru, also works at the college as a custodian; the two quickly became best friends, the story noted.
In between cleaning tasks, in an effort to maximize his study time, Jaramillo recites facts about America jotted down on pieces of paper that he carries around with him, the story added.
