RAMSEY, NJ — Negotiators for the Ramsey school board and the union representing district buildings and grounds workers are seeking mediation after sessions held over the summer failed to resolve issues, according to the Ramsey Suburban News.
School board officials say the union, which represents 36 custodians and groundskeepers, rejected an offer that included changes in health benefits, the article noted.
At the board of education meeting Tuesday, September 28, trustee Claudia Monteith, head of the negotiations committee, said the proposed change in health benefits would have been a "cost saving measure" for the district.
"We value the work of that unit, but the economic climate impacted the negotiations," Monteith said at the meeting.
"We no longer can sustain the status quo on health benefits. Decisions will be made on the pragmatic realization of our financial capabilities," Monteith added.
