NEW PHILADELPHIA, OH — A newly erected sign will soon adorn the front of Welty Middle School thanks to the unselfish efforts of a longtime custodian and several local businesses, according to the Times-Reporter.

Chris Born, a 34-year veteran custodian whose father and grandfather were bricklayers, took several weeks of personal vacation time to work on the project off the clock, the story stated.

Born said, "I''ve always wanted to do something for the school. I''m going to be retiring in the future, and I want something that I could drive by the school and say, ''Hey, I had a part of that.''"

Aside from Born dedicating his time and craftsmanship, Belden Brick Company donated the bricks; Fenton Electric provided a light so it will be lit at night; Glass Lumber Company unloaded the bricks; Frontier Rental allowed the use of a cement mixer; and Reese Cast Stone gave Born a discount on the cement blocks that will top the sign, the story noted.

The new sign will replace an aging wooden one and will resemble the sign in front of New Philadelphia High School, the story added.
