BURNABY, BC — Seventeen members of the custodial staff at the Brentwood Town Mall announced plans for a public protest this Saturday, according to BIV Business Today.

Their jobs are in danger because Shape Properties, a 50 percent owner of the mall, have decided to contract out cleaning and maintenance work, the article reported.

"Brentwood Town Centre used to be considered a community partner in Burnaby. But what kind of community partner cuts decent paying jobs with benefits in our community," said Jessie Hon Wen, a custodian at the mall for four years.

While support for the custodian’s case is growing throughout the community, calls to Shape Properties have thus far gone unanswered, the article stated.

They will find out soon enough that farming out does not work. In house workers take a lot more pride in their job and you get more done. Outside companies often come in with a great price but after they get their foot in the door the price of everything goes way up. They will learn in a hurry and wish they had their own employees back. I wish all that work their the very best and hang in there because you will get a call asking to come back. These outside companies don't get rich for nothing.
