The August issue of Cleanfax magazine is now available online, featuring Chuck Violand''s "The trouble with ''having to be right''" article.
Violand states that the more decisions we make correctly, the more likely we are to be successful, but it''s easy to trip ourselves up when we become more interested in being right than in making the right decision.
He notes that for example, a business decision we insisted on "goes south," but rather than accepting responsibility for the decision, correcting it and learning from it, we insist we were right all along and proceed to blame our employees, customers and/or equipment for the failure.
Violand adds that we might think that admitting we are wrong to an employee will make us look weak, when in reality, the exact opposite is true.
According to Violand, when we are able to "not be right," we let people know we are approachable, open to learning and value their opinions.
Chuck Violand began his career by founding a carpet cleaning and disaster restoration operation in northeast Ohio in 1977, and in 1989, began consulting full-time. Each June, Violand hosts an Executive Summit to help owners and managers of cleaning and restoration companies learn the executive skills necessary to manage a growing business (visit www.violand.com for details). Violand can be reached at (330) 966-0700.
