Alleged illegal immigrant cleaners arrested for Kmart theft

MESA, AZ — Two members of a Kmart department store cleaning crew were arrested after admitting stealing more than $50,000 in merchandise from the retailer over the past eight months, according to the East Valley Tribune.
Peralta Zapata and Gaeta Robles, both believed to be illegal immigrants from Mexico, were arrested after employees saw them trying to leave the store with items without paying, the story stated.
The duo told police they had stolen goods from the store every day for nearly a year and were selling the items to friends and sending them to family in Mexico, the story noted.
According to the story, employees from the loss prevention department had Zapata and Robles under video surveillance the weekend of their arrest and were caught on tape stealing an estimated $1,000 worth of items.
A search warrant of the cleaners'' home turned up an estimated $20,000 in merchandise, including compact disks (CDs), digital video disks (DVDs), clothes and toiletries, the story added.
