Clients who frequent hair and nail salons more than three times a year have an increased risk of fungal and dermal infections, according to a study from researchers at the Rutgers School of Public Health.

The study, which was published in the Journal of Chemical Health and Safety, found that about half (52 percent) of surveyed clients experienced a dermal or fungal symptom following a salon visit, Infection Control Today reports. These symptoms were more prevalent among clients who had salon services three or more times in the past year.

Researchers believe the results from this and other studies could lead to the development of new training materials and interventions on infection control and indoor air improvements.
