The Infectious Diseases Society of America and the HIV Medicine Association have issued a joint statement calling for aid to avert a public health crisis in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands following Hurricanes Maria and Irma.

Of particular concern is the potential for the spread of infectious diseases due to overcrowded and unsanitary conditions, Contagion Live reports. Risks include:

  • Exposure to water-borne pathogens
  • The spread of infections in crowded shelters
  • Food-borne illnesses
  • Mosquito-borne infections
  • Mold-related illnesses.
