Taking a cell phone in and out of the restroom with you is like leaving the restroom without washing your hands, according to a professor of epidemiology at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. Recent studies have found more than 17,000 bacterial gene copies on cell phones, and that the typical cell phone carries 10 times more bacterial than most toilet seats, reports Time magazine.

The best way to keep your cell phone clean is to keep it out of the restroom. If you do bring it in with you, make sure to wipe to down afterward with a soft microfiber cloth. For a deeper clean, gently wipe it down with a combination of 60 percent water and 40 percent rubbing alcohol.
