Frequent use of chemical cleaners coupled with a lack of ventilation can create dangerous levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), according to a recent study.

Researchers from the University of York in York, England, and King’s College London in London, England, found high VOC levels were linked to poor ventilation in more modern insulated homes which frequently used cleaning chemical products. A measurement of 25 residential homes found 94 percent contained high levels of monoterpenes, a chemical compound which in high concentrations, can interact with ozone to form the dangerous chemical, formaldehyde.
