Researchers at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) in Boca Raton, FL, recently received a USS$199,280 grant from the Florida Department of Health to develop new testing for the Zika virus.

Current Zika virus testing has difficulty determining if antibodies in the bloodstream are fighting the Zika virus or other mosquito-borne viruses like West Nile. The testing being developed by FAU researchers deploys  a similar diagnostic tool used to detect the HIV virus through a saliva swab designed from inexpensive collection materials, EurekaAlert reports.

”For about [US]$2 and within 15 minutes, we hope to accurately determine whether or not an individual has an active infection,” said Waseem Asghar, Ph.D and lead investigator and assistant professor at FAU’s Colleges of engineering and biological sciences.
