Ultraviolet (UV) light disinfection is effective against bacterial contamination in health care facilities, making it a resource for hospital cleaning crews working to disinfect difficult-to-reach areas and lower the rate of health care-associated infections (HAIs).

A study by Duke University in Dunham, NC, funded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, tested a combination of UV light disinfection with standard cleaning protocols across nine hospitals in the Southeast United States. The two-year study found patient exposure to bacterial contamination—a major cause of HAIs—to be significantly lower when using UV light with standard cleaning protocols as opposed to just cleaning.
