Health care facility robots that disinfect the air and hard-to-reach areas can offset their steep price by helping cleaning crews reduce a hospital’s infection rate, according to an article from Outpatient Surgery Magazine.

On average, C. difficile infections cost a health care facility US$7,285 per patient due to extended stays or readmission, a 2015 study by the American Journal of Infection Control reports. However, adopting robots is already helping one hospital reduce these costs: Olean General Hospital in New York reduced its infection rate of C. difficile bacteria by 17 percent since adopting robots last December, the article from Outpatient Surgery Magazine said.

While the robots can cost more than $100,000 per unit, the cost of re-admitted patients due to infection costs health care facilities more than $45 billion a year, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports.
