School District Saves $800,000 a Year with Team Cleaning
Riverside Unified School District has 52 sites and 3.5 million sq. ft. of cleanable space spread out across a large area of Riverside County in Southern California. Eric Troxel, Assistant Director of Grounds, Custodial, and Waste Management for the district, learned in 2011 that his program was facing budget cuts.
In order to work with the new budget, Troxel knew he would have to nearly double square footage per custodian. He started an ambitious pilot test at two elementary schools and one middle school to try out the systematized cleaning program, Team Cleaning®. Though the pilot test was successful, many on the custodial staff were still unconvinced.
“They didn’t believe it was going to work,” said Troxel. “I actually put myself as one of the team members to make sure I could keep up. Once I experienced it, I knew that anyone could do it.”
In nine months, the transition was done. The custodial department reduced their budget by 800,000 dollars a year, increasing square feet per FTE from 21,000 to 44,000 through the help of HEPA-filtered backpack vacuums from ProTeam®. The backpacks remove allergens from the air, so the health of the environment is improved. In fact, Cleaning for Health is one of the major tenets of Team Cleaning’s philosophy.
“We’re Cleaning for Health. This affects all the kids,” said Troxel. “I bring in the experts and we talk about why we use HEPA and green chemicals. Our responsibility is to create the best environment for our students and educators.”
