Is That A Light?

What a strange six years for the global economy.

Without getting too deep into the specifics of “The Great Recession,” one trend the downturn definitely left behind was a lack of positive economic reportage.

From the burst housing bubble to sinking employment numbers, media agencies always seemed to be in a rush to reveal the bleak realities.

After years of growing negativity, positive economic reports can feel downright revelatory.

Success Ahead

For our May issue, we cite multiple sources that predict exciting times ahead for the cleaning industry — and perhaps the U.S. economy as a whole.

This month, we proudly present a two-part report on the building service contractor (BSC) market.

Rich DiPaolo, Cleaning & Maintenance Management’s Editorial Director, attended the 2014 World Federation of Building Service Contractors World Congress held in Manhattan in early April.

With an array of established speakers covering a number of subjects, the well-attended congress was packed with information for business owners.

The two keynote addresses, handled by Dr. Peter Diamandis of the X PRIZE Foundation and Steve Forbes of Forbes Magazine, painted positive pictures for cleaning professionals.

As DiPaolo reports on page 25, Diamandis explained that BSCs must be open to change while exploring the part that innovation and technology will play in future service development.

In his presentation, Forbes looked back at the beginning of the recent recession, and then made his case for why the U.S. should expect significant growth in the coming years.

Survey Says

Another dose of welcome good news comes directly from a group of active BSCs.

The 2014 Building Service Contractor Survey responses on page 27 provide a wealth of information about today’s BSC market.

While we frequently hear small businesses and entrepreneurship have been crippled by the sluggish economy and new legislation, the majority of BSC respondents showed significantly increased or somewhat increased revenues in 2013.

For 2014, over 72 percent of the contractors who responded expect revenues to increase while almost 20 percent plan on stable revenue.

Compared to dark clouds and preparing for the worst, these results also point to potential positivity in the JanSan industry.

Further survey responses showcase starting wages, operational challenges, competition and purchasing habits.

Yet, our industry coverage for May goes farther than the BSC market.
