The Healthy Facilities Institute (HFI) has identified at least five reasons why we need cleaning science and technical journals:

  1. Every well-paid profession is supported by research, metrics and technical knowledge (think of the medical field, engineering, even plumbers and electricians)
  2. "Cleaning" is a metaphor for environmental improvement (and related health impacts) so should be supported by scientific research, data, and an official body (such as the Cleaning Industry Research Institute or CIRI) and technical journals (such as the IICRC's Technical Journal).
  3. The definition of contaminants has broadened and deepened, as we now remove more than just "dirt" - but allergens, dust-borne pollutants, moisture, unwanted chemicals / residues, and more.
  4. The need for cleaning standards (such as the ISSA Clean Standard K-12) has never been greater, and organizations and publications that explain the meaning and, ideally, the public health impact of standards, are essential.
  5. It "feels better" to be part of an industry that is governed and supported by deep knowledge rather than marketing spin.
