DES MOINES, IA — Recent bids from several facility management companies throughout the city illustrated that private firms are not able to compete with the "efficiency and cost savings of using city staff for maintenance at city facilities," according to the Des Moines Register.
City staff solicited bids from private companies to consider outsourcing the management and maintenance of things like electrical, heating ventilation and air conditioning services, as well as custodial work, with four companies submitting proposals, the article stated.
According to the article, the current maintenance costs for the city total just over $400,000, which compares to the lowest contractor bid of nearly $500,000.
As a result, the West Des Moines City Council unanimously approved the recommendation to reject all bids for maintenance services, the article noted.
